Strange Medicine by Mike Russell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

*** This book was given to me for free in exchange for my honest and true review ***

They say never judge a book by its cover….… Well, I always do. Its instinct. I can’t help it. Most of us probably do. This cover along with the title screamed horror novel to me, possibly involving revenge or karma. Maybe a dark and twisted plot. The phrase ‘Taste of your own medicine’ came to mind. Now I realise that the covers intention is to in fact be simple and open to suggestions.

I was lucky enough to be asked to review this in exchange for a copy to read on my kindle. I am always honest and always start my reviews with an open mind. I didn’t purposely look for a book to read therefore didn’t have big expectations.

I had some time to kill on the plane so I thought it would be a perfect time to make a start. A few times I had side glances from my work colleague when I snickered or attempted to hide a giggle. When they asked what I was I was reading, I found it difficulty to explain. ‘Strange Medicine’ is a collection of weird and wonderful stories. What happens in these stories are completely absurd, but I found myself going along with it as if it indeed did make sense. Each story I suppose had a moral to it, or a reason behind. Some are easier to understand that others. My favourite was the phone story which was the one that I found myself giggling at.

At first I didn’t understand what I was reading…. Was it a joke? Or a dream? Everything happened as though there no was no reason it wouldn’t. Then I was gripped, just in time for the story to finish and to start onto the next one. And repeat.

I wanted more from each story, but that was the intention which I get but is still at the same time annoying. I suppose thats what makes a good story — or in this case stories.

Thank you!
