Book Review: It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

“Sometimes the one who loves you is the one who hurts you the most.”
I started ‘This Ends With Us’ on my kindle a few weeks back and for some reason I only read a few chapters then put it down. This was not fault of the book, I just think that something else was going on at the time and I became very busy.
So anyway, I switched to the audiobook the other day so I could listen in the car, at home cooking and at the gym. My first instinct about a quarter of the way through was that this was going to be a love triangle as the blurb doesn’t give too much away, but insinuates someone getting hurt which involves the characters current and old lover.
Man was I wrong. Without giving to much away which I’m sure other reviews do – this book hit hard to a sensitive subject matter that could only feel this true if the writer has some experience one way or another. This is upsetting to assume but does make the content feel more authentic. So thank you Colleen Hoover for that.
What I enjoyed about the audiobook was the acting. I felt like I was watching a long film but the visuals are made up in my head. I lost count of the amount of times I remained transfixed, forgetting to get out of the car or accidentally burning my toast.
There is just one person POV which is perfect. Any other tense or characters wouldn’t of worked here. Lily’s character is all she told herself she was. Strong, passionate and reliable. Yes there were times I felt like shaking her and telling her she’s stupid, but thats my naivety to the subject. I have no clue what I would do or feel. Nor would anyone else until they are in it.
I didn’t realise how much this book would affect me until it was over. Everything surprised me and nothing made sense to me until it was explained by Lily – then I understood why.
Although fictional, and based on true inspired events, it felt as those it had something to teach me. Don’t assume everything is black and white, don’t assume that walking away is the easiest and best option, and don’t assume that person is weak for not doing so straight away.
